    Summary

    Complement deposition in the placenta is increased in pre-eclampsia (PE). This study found higher levels of complement components C1q, C3d, and C9 in PE placentae, suggesting immune involvement in PE pathophysiology.

    Background:

    • Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a serious pregnancy complication.
    • The role of the immune system in PE pathophysiology is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and deposition patterns of complement components in human placentae from normal pregnancies and PE.
    • To determine if complement deposition differs between normal and PE placentae, and between mild and severe PE.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunofluorescence was used to study complement (C) components C1q, C4, C3d, C6, and C9 in 40 human placentae.
    • Placentae were obtained from 20 normal pregnancies and 20 with PE (sub-grouped as mild or severe).

  • Deposition of C1q, C3d, and C9 was significantly increased in PE placentae compared to normal controls.

    • Immunological mechanisms involving complement activation are likely operating in the chorionic villi of PE placentae.
    • These findings suggest that immune processes may contribute to the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm the role of immune processes in PE.
