    Summary

This study found no adverse effects on the immune system of male anaesthetists working in scavenged operating rooms. T and B lymphocyte responses remained normal, indicating workplace safety for these healthcare professionals.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Occupational Health

    Background:

    • Operating theatre environments may pose risks to healthcare workers' immune systems.
    • Scavenged operating theatres aim to minimize exposure to anesthetic gases and airborne contaminants.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare humoral and cell-mediated immune functions between anaesthetists in scavenged operating theatres and internists.
    • To assess potential harmful effects of operating theatre work on immune responses.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparison of unstimulated and stimulated plaque-forming cells (immunoglobulin production).
    • Quantification of secreted IgG, IgM, and IgA.
    • Assessment of lymphocyte proliferative responses to various mitogens and antigens.
    • Evaluation of hydrocortisone-sensitive suppressor cell function.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in immunoglobulin production or secretion between the two groups.
    • Lymphocyte proliferation assays showed similar responses in both anaesthetists and internists.
    • Suppressor cell function did not differ between the groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Work in scavenged operating theatres does not appear to negatively impact T and B lymphocyte functions in male anaesthetists.
    • Current operating theatre scavenging systems seem adequate in protecting anaesthetists' immune systems.
