Abstract:
The value of contrast enhancement for the diagnosis of the ischemic brain infarct is discussed critically. In some publications there were hints to possible deterioration of the clinical prognosis of patients with brain infarcts if contrast medium had invaded into the brain parenchyma. The pathophysiological base is briefly discussed. The leading idea is the restrictive use of the contrast medium. Our opinions of different publications are controversial, and therefore useless for the diagnostic consequences. We have gained by working out detailed rules for the indication of a intravasal contrast application in patients with brain infarcts.
