    Summary

    Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) prevents snoring by stabilizing the upper airway. Alcohol intake reduces upper airway stability in a dose-dependent manner, worsening snoring severity.

    Background:

    • Snoring severity varies widely, from occasional instances to habitual, heavy snoring often associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
    • Upper airway collapsibility is a key factor in snoring and obstructive events.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between snoring severity and upper airway closing pressure (UACP).
    • To assess the effect of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and alcohol on upper airway stability.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 14 subjects with varying snoring severity, divided into three groups.
    • Measured UACP during sleep and assessed the impact of nasal CPAP and alcohol intake.
    • Evaluated upper airway collapsibility during different sleep stages and during asphyxia.

    Main Results:

    • Nasal CPAP effectively prevented snoring across all subjects.
    • A correlation was found between clinical snoring severity and UACP, with greater collapsibility in heavier snorers.
