Mycoplasma gallisepticum isolation in layers.

    Summary

    Choanal cleft swabs provide higher Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) isolation rates in chickens compared to tracheal swabs. This method is also less stressful and easier for sample collection in poultry health surveillance.

    Background:

    • Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is a significant poultry pathogen.
    • Current MG diagnostic methods often rely on tracheal swabs, which can be contaminated or stressful for birds.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of choanal cleft swabs for MG isolation.
    • To compare MG isolation rates between choanal cleft and tracheal swabs.
    • To identify a less invasive and more reliable sampling method for MG detection.

    Main Methods:

    • Commercial Leghorn chickens were experimentally infected with the F strain of MG.
    • Tracheal and choanal cleft swabs were collected from inoculated chickens.
    • MG isolation and quantification were performed on collected swab samples.

    Main Results:

    • MG was isolated from 15 of 101 (14.85%) tracheal swab samples.
    • MG was isolated from 51 of 108 (47.22%) choanal cleft swab samples.
    • Choanal cleft swabs demonstrated significantly higher MG isolation rates.

    Conclusions:

    • Choanal cleft swabbing is a more sensitive method for MG detection in chickens.
    • This technique offers an easier and less stressful alternative to tracheal swabbing for poultry disease surveillance.
