    Summary

    Relaxation techniques, with or without biofeedback, effectively lowered blood pressure in hypertensive patients when combined with medication. Home monitoring showed significant reductions compared to controls.

    Background:

    • Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is crucial for assessing treatment efficacy in daily life.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a 10-week relaxation treatment program for lowering blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension.
    • To compare the effects of relaxation therapy, relaxation with electromyographic biofeedback, and self-monitoring on blood pressure.
    • To assess the impact of combining relaxation techniques with antihypertensive medication versus relaxation alone.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized controlled trial involving four groups: relaxation, relaxation plus biofeedback, blood pressure self-monitoring (control), and relaxation without medication.
    • All participants received antihypertensive medication, except for the relaxation-only group.

    • Home blood pressure monitoring is a sensitive indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of behavioral interventions in hypertension management.
