[Diagnostic value of the human basophil degranulation test in schistosomiasis]

The human basophil degranulation test (HBDT) was applied to the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. In 120 cases confirmed by parasitological examination, the test was shown to be extremely sensitive (90% clearly positive responses) and specific. The total immunoglobulin E levels were higher in infested subjects (average value: 2,000 IU/ml) compared to an average of 500 IU/ml in control subjects. However, wide individual variations were observed and other parasitoses can also produce considerable increases. The measurement of specific IgE showed a clear response with high positive levels in patients with bilharziasis whereas the response was always negative in the controls.
