    Background:

    • Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder often associated with dopamine pathway dysregulation.

    • A patient with tardive dyskinesia experienced a reduced hypokinetic effect from reserpine during long-term lithium treatment.
    • In a rat model, lithium administration prior to reserpine prevented dopamine depletion in the brain.

    • Lithium may interfere with the therapeutic mechanism of reserpine in tardive dyskinesia.
