The implications of setting up a diagnostic ultrasound service in a community hospital are described and present no insuperable difficulties. The escalation in the utilization indicates growing awareness of the value and safety of the technique among community physicians, and from the present workload (2.4 examinations per 100 persons per year) it appears that the service is no less valid and valuable than in major medical centres.
