    Summary

    Azthreonam, a new monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic, shows excellent in vitro activity against Gram-negative urinary pathogens. Most Enterobacteriaceae were highly susceptible, with potency comparable to tobramycin.

    Background:

    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are commonly caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
    • The emergence of antibiotic resistance necessitates the evaluation of novel antimicrobial agents.
    • Azthreonam is a novel monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic with potential utility in treating Gram-negative infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the in vitro activity of azthreonam against Gram-negative urinary pathogens.
    • To determine the susceptibility patterns of clinical isolates to azthreonam.
    • To compare the potency of azthreonam with other routinely used antibiotics.

    Main Methods:

    • Susceptibility testing of 105 consecutive Gram-negative urinary isolates.
    • Disc diffusion testing was performed to assess sensitivity.
    • Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined for key bacterial groups.

    Main Results:

    • All isolates demonstrated sensitivity or intermediate sensitivity to azthreonam via disc diffusion.
    • 97% of Enterobacteriaceae exhibited MICs of 0.25 mg/l.

    • The antibiotic is effective against Enterobacteriaceae and demonstrates notable activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
    • Azthreonam represents a promising therapeutic option for UTIs caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria.
