    Background:

    • Postpartum blues affect a significant percentage of mothers.
    • The interplay between hormones, neurotransmitters, and mood in the postpartum period requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between hormone levels, plasma catecholamines, and mood disturbances in the early postpartum period.
    • To identify potential biomarkers for postpartum emotional lability.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma levels of hormones (FSH, prolactin, oestrone, oestradiol, cortisol, progesterone) and catecholamines (noradrenaline, adrenaline) were measured.
    • Mood disturbances were assessed in 44 mothers during days 2-5 postpartum.

    Main Results:

    • No significant correlation was found between hormone levels and postpartum blues.
