    Context:

    • Continuous intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH) disrupts natural metabolic rhythms and hormone secretion.
    • This disruption can lead to disturbed protein synthesis and nitrogen balance.
    • Existing IVH methods require 24-hour infusions, posing significant challenges.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the efficacy of intermittent intraportal hyperalimentation (IPH) as an alternative to continuous IVH.
    • To assess the impact of IPH on metabolic disturbances, hormone levels, and nutrient uptake.
    • To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of IPH in canine models.

    • IPH involved infusing glucose and amino acids into the portal vein for 10 hours daily, followed by a 14-hour break.
    • This regimen resulted in near-physiological insulin and glucagon levels.
    • The liver demonstrated a high amino acid uptake rate (52%), and nitrogen balance was maintained despite a low non-protein calorie to nitrogen ratio.

    Impact:

    • IPH led to a significant increase in body weight (3.6%) and serum protein levels (p < 0.01).

    • Minor portal vein changes were observed in one dog, but the liver remained histologically unchanged.
