Background:
Osteoporosis is characterized by bone fragility and increased fracture risk.
The nonexchangeable sodium in bone (Naes) and its relationship to bone health are not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
To investigate the sodium excess (Naes) in women with vertebral crush fracture syndrome.
To explore correlations between Naes, bone metabolism markers, and hormonal factors in osteoporosis.
Main Methods:
Calculation of nonexchangeable sodium in bone (Naes) using total body sodium and chlorine.
Analysis of 95 women with vertebral crush fracture syndrome.
Correlation analysis with serum alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone (PTH), urinary hydroxyproline, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D.
Main Results:
No evidence of subpopulations with altered Naes or Naes:Total Body Calcium (TBCa) ratio.
Significant correlations found between Naes and serum alkaline phosphatase, PTH, urinary hydroxyproline, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in osteoporotic women.
These correlations were not observed in control groups.
Conclusions:
Vitamin D status and parathyroid hormone levels may influence bone sodium quantity in osteoporotic women.
The findings highlight potential metabolic links in osteoporosis not present in healthy controls.
