    Background:

    • Osteoporosis is characterized by bone fragility and increased fracture risk.
    • The nonexchangeable sodium in bone (Naes) and its relationship to bone health are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the sodium excess (Naes) in women with vertebral crush fracture syndrome.
    • To explore correlations between Naes, bone metabolism markers, and hormonal factors in osteoporosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Calculation of nonexchangeable sodium in bone (Naes) using total body sodium and chlorine.
    • Analysis of 95 women with vertebral crush fracture syndrome.
    • Correlation analysis with serum alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone (PTH), urinary hydroxyproline, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

    Main Results:

    • No evidence of subpopulations with altered Naes or Naes:Total Body Calcium (TBCa) ratio.
    • Significant correlations found between Naes and serum alkaline phosphatase, PTH, urinary hydroxyproline, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in osteoporotic women.
    • These correlations were not observed in control groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Vitamin D status and parathyroid hormone levels may influence bone sodium quantity in osteoporotic women.
    • The findings highlight potential metabolic links in osteoporosis not present in healthy controls.
