Erythrocyte choline concentrations and cluster headache.

    Summary

Erythrocyte choline levels are significantly lower in cluster headache patients. Lithium treatment normalized these levels, suggesting choline deficiency may predispose individuals to cluster headaches.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Cluster headache is a debilitating neurological disorder.
    • Erythrocyte choline concentrations have not been extensively studied in relation to cluster headaches.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate erythrocyte choline concentrations in cluster headache patients.
    • To assess the effect of lithium treatment on these concentrations.

    Main Methods:

    • Erythrocyte choline concentrations were measured in patients with cluster headache and control subjects.
    • Concentrations were measured during and between cluster periods.
    • The effect of two weeks of lithium treatment was evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • Erythrocyte choline concentrations were significantly reduced (58% and 55% of control) in cluster headache patients during and between attacks.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Lithium treatment increased choline concentrations to 78 times the control value.
  • Mean concentration rose from 4.7 mumol/l to 369.2 mumol/l.
  • Conclusions:

    • Depressed erythrocyte choline may be a predisposing factor for cluster headaches.
    • This deficiency, when combined with trigger factors, may precipitate attacks.
    • Lithium treatment shows potential in restoring normal choline levels.
