    Summary

Electron beam quality, including energy spread, has minimal impact on depth-dose curves. This study offers a novel comparison of electron beam spectral characteristics and their effect on dose distribution using a single experimental setup.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Physics
    • Radiation Oncology
    • Accelerator Physics

    Background:

    • Electron beam quality significantly influences radiation therapy dose distribution.
    • Previous studies comparing different spectral qualities used varied experimental setups, complicating direct comparisons.
    • Understanding the impact of spectral shape on electron depth-dose profiles is crucial for treatment planning.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between electron beam spectral characteristics and depth-dose fall-off.
    • To evaluate the influence of energy spread on electron beam dosimetry.
    • To provide a direct comparison of spectral quality effects using a single experimental setup.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurements of electron depth-dose curves and spectra were performed.
    • An experimental accelerator allowed independent variation of beam energy and spectral shape.
    • Nominal energies of 6 and 12 MeV were used, with energy spread (FWHM) ranging from 1.7% to over 10%.

    Main Results:

    • Depth-dose fall-off characteristics showed only a weak correlation with the accelerator's spectral width.
    • Variations in spectral shape had a limited impact on the measured depth-dose profiles.
    • The use of a single experimental setup minimized confounding variables from different accelerator designs.

    Conclusions:

    • The width of the electron beam spectrum has a minor effect on depth-dose fall-off in the studied energy range.
    • Independent control over energy and spectral shape confirmed the limited influence of spectral width on dose distribution.
    • This research provides a more reliable basis for understanding electron beam dosimetry and spectral quality.
