    Summary

    Intrajejunally infused enteral formulas and solid food show similar nutrient absorption in undernourished patients. Predigestion of formulas does not enhance absorption, suggesting comparable efficacy for renourishment.

    Background:

    • Undernourished hospitalized patients require effective nutritional support.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the net absorption and retention of energy, fat, nitrogen, and key elements from two intrajejunally infused enteral formulas versus a solid food diet.
    • To evaluate the impact of formula predigestion on nutrient absorption in undernourished patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Two groups of undernourished patients participated in 7-day balance studies.
    • Group 1 received either an elemental or polymeric enteral formula intrajejunally.
