Abstract:
The establishment of a federally initiated prospective reimbursement system using the concept of the diagnostic related group (DRG) marks a radical departure from the traditional retrospective formulas for hospital Medicare payment. A historical analysis of the revolutionary changes involving DRGs is presented, along with a discussion of the challenges confronting hospital-based social work.
