The fibrinolytic system in pre-eclampsia.

Summary

Pre-eclampsia in primigravidae did not significantly alter plasma fibrinolytic activity or inhibitory activity against urokinase and tissue activators. These findings suggest no major differences in the fibrinolytic system between pre-eclamptic and uncomplicated pregnancies.

Background:

Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication.
The fibrinolytic system plays a crucial role in hemostasis.
Understanding fibrinolysis in pre-eclampsia is important for managing pregnancy complications.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate plasma fibrinolytic activity in pre-eclampsia.
To assess plasma inhibitory activity against urokinase and tissue plasminogen activator in pre-eclampsia.
To compare these activities between pre-eclamptic and uncomplicated pregnancies.

Main Methods:

Measured plasma fibrinolytic activity in primigravidae with and without pre-eclampsia.
Assessed plasma inhibitory activity against urokinase and tissue plasminogen activator.
Utilized gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 for fraction analysis.

Main Results:

No significant differences in mean fibrinolytic activity were found between groups.
No significant differences in inhibitory activity against urokinase and tissue plasminogen activator were observed.
Similar patterns of inhibitory fractions were noted after gel filtration.

Conclusions:

Plasma fibrinolytic activity and inhibitory capacity against key activators do not appear significantly altered in moderate to severe pre-eclampsia.
The fibrinolytic system's basic components may not be a primary driver of pre-eclampsia pathophysiology.
Further research may explore other hemostatic or vascular factors in pre-eclampsia.
