    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Microbiology

    Background:

    • Urethral syndrome is a common condition in women presenting with urinary symptoms.
    • The etiology of urethral syndrome is often unclear, with common bacterial pathogens frequently absent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the microbiological causes of urethral syndrome in adult women.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of doxycycline treatment for persistent urethral syndrome.

    Main Methods:

    • Detailed microbiological investigations were performed on 39 adult women with urethral syndrome.
    • A randomized controlled trial compared doxycycline treatment with placebo for persistent symptoms.

    Main Results:

    • Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae were not isolated from patients.
    • Fastidious organisms were not found to be causally associated with the syndrome.
    • Doxycycline treatment showed no significant benefit over placebo.

    Conclusions:

    • Urethral syndrome in this cohort was not linked to common or fastidious bacterial infections.
    • The condition appears to be short and self-limiting, with no observed recurrences within 12 months.
    • Doxycycline is not an effective treatment for urethral syndrome.
