    Bacterial contamination in enteral nutrient solutions (ENS) can be reduced by controlling bacterial load and hang time. Adding potassium sorbate significantly inhibited bacterial growth in ENS, meeting food safety standards.

    Background:

    • Bacterial contamination of enteral nutrient solutions (ENS) is a concern in hospitals, potentially causing nosocomial infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the bacterial growth-sustaining properties of various enteral nutrient solutions.
    • To develop methods for limiting bacterial growth in ENS.
    • To assess the efficacy of potassium sorbate in inhibiting bacterial growth in ENS.

    • Five commercial ENS were prepared and inoculated with Enterobacter cloacae.
    • Bacterial counts were taken over 24 hours at room temperature.
    • Potassium sorbate was added to one ENS to evaluate its bacteriostatic effect.

    • Enteral nutrient solutions Ensure, Travasorb, and Vital supported higher bacterial growth rates than Precision and Vivonex.
    • Vivonex contained potassium sorbate, a known bacteriostatic agent.
    • Adding 0.03% potassium sorbate to Travasorb reduced bacterial growth by 75%, with final counts within regulated limits.

    Conclusions:

    • Bacterial growth in ENS can be managed by controlling initial inoculum, growth rate, and hang time.
    • Potassium sorbate is an effective bacteriostatic agent for reducing bacterial counts in ENS.
    • Implementing these strategies can significantly reduce bacterial contamination in enteral feeding solutions.
