A 10% mannitol solution effective for colonic preparation for X-ray.

G Nanni, P Luchetti, A Garbini

    The Japanese Journal of Surgery
    |May 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Oral mannitol solution effectively prepares the colon for X-ray exams, showing good results in 88.6% of patients. This method is well-tolerated, especially with one liter of solution, minimizing adverse effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Radiology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Effective colonic preparation is crucial for accurate X-ray examinations.
    • Oral mannitol solution is used for bowel cleansing before procedures.
    • Understanding its efficacy and safety profile is important.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate hydroelectrolytic changes, efficacy, and complications of oral 10% mannitol solution for colonic preparation.
    • To compare the effects of one liter versus two liters of mannitol solution.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-six patients underwent colonic preparation using oral 10% mannitol solution.
    • Patients received either one liter (n=15) or two liters (n=11) of the solution.
    • Hydroelectrolytic balance, time of action, and complications were assessed.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • No significant hydroelectrolytic changes were observed in patients.
    • Colon X-ray studies showed good evacuation in 88.6% of cases.
    • Adverse events included nausea/vomiting (6%), abdominal distention (11.7%), and hypotension (7.6%), with better tolerance for one liter.

    Conclusions:

    • Oral mannitol solution is an effective and generally well-tolerated agent for colonic preparation.
    • Using one liter of the 10% solution appears to enhance patient tolerance.
    • The study supports the use of mannitol for pre-radiological bowel cleansing.
