    Summary

    Bupropion showed mild efficacy in treating Parkinson's disease symptoms, improving motor function in half of the patients. However, frequent side effects limited its use in some individuals.

    Background:

    • Bupropion is an antidepressant acting as an indirect dopaminergic agonist.
    • It lacks significant sympathomimetic, anti-cholinergic, or MAO inhibitor effects.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of bupropion in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease were assessed.
    • Efficacy was measured by improvements in Parkinsonism using disability scales.
    • Depression symptom alleviation was also monitored.

    Main Results:

    • Half of the patients experienced at least a 30% reduction in Parkinsonism.
    • Depression improved in 5 out of 12 patients who had it initially.
    • Frequent side effects were observed, dose-limiting in five patients.
