Return of splenic function after splenectomy: how much tissue is needed?

    Summary

    Splenic function can return after spleen removal, even with trauma. Splenosis, or spleen regrowth, was observed in adults, indicating a need for adequate graft size for successful splenic tissue implantation.

    Background:

    • Spleen removal (splenectomy) can be due to trauma or elective procedures.
    • Assessing the return of splenic function post-splenectomy is crucial for patient health.
    • Pitted red cell count and spleen scans are methods to evaluate splenic function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the return of splenic function in patients after splenectomy.
    • To differentiate between splenic regeneration and splenosis.
    • To determine the correlation between splenic tissue volume and function.

    • Ninety patients (41 trauma, 49 elective splenectomy) were studied.
    • Pitted red blood cell counts were analyzed.
    • Spleen scans using heat-damaged 99mTc-labeled red cells were performed.
