    Summary

Poor articulation in speech is linked to increased nasality, with males exhibiting more imprecise speech and nasality than females. This study explored the relationship between speech precision and nasality.

    Area of Science:

    • Speech-Language Pathology
    • Acoustic Phonetics
    • Psychoacoustics

    Background:

    • Nasality in speech can affect intelligibility and perceived quality.
    • Articulation precision is a key component of clear speech production.
    • Understanding the relationship between nasality and articulation is crucial for diagnosing and treating speech disorders.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between the degree of articulation precision and nasality in spoken language.
    • To determine if gender influences the relationship between speech precision and nasality.

    Main Methods:

    • Two reading passages, one with and one without nasal consonants, were recorded.
    • Speech samples from 72 subjects (34 precise, 38 imprecise articulators) were analyzed.
    • The psychological scaling method of equal-appearing intervals (7-point scale) was used to assess precision and nasality.

    Main Results:

    • A significant relationship was found between decreased articulation precision and increased nasality.
    • Imprecise articulation was associated with a higher degree of unpleasant nasality.
    • Males tended to exhibit more imprecise articulation and higher levels of nasality compared to females.

    Conclusions:

    • Reduced articulation precision is perceptually linked to increased nasality.
    • Gender differences exist in speech articulation precision and nasality.
    • Findings have implications for speech diagnostics and therapeutic interventions targeting nasality and articulation.
