    Background:

    • Non-specific immune responses can enhance resistance to infections.
    • Intestinal bacteria play a role in modulating host immunity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunomodulatory effects of bacterial preparations on host resistance.
    • To determine the efficacy of different vaccines against bacterial infections.

    Main Methods:

    • Mice were treated with injectable killed E. coli or oral vaccines (Streptococcus faecalis and E. coli, viable S. faecalis, viable E. coli).
    • Subsequent challenge infections with Salmonella typhimurium and Haemophilus influenzae were performed.
    • Microbicidal activity, leukocyte activity, and neutrophilic cell chemotaxis were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Injectable killed E. coli increased blood microbicidal activity and protection against S. typhimurium.
    • Oral vaccines enhanced resistance to S. typhimurium and H. influenzae.
    • Enhanced resistance was linked to increased chemotactic efficiency of neutrophilic cells.

    Conclusions:

    • Bacterial preparations, both injectable and oral, can non-specifically enhance host resistance to infections.
    • The mechanism involves improved immune cell function, particularly neutrophilic chemotaxis.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the action of all tested oral vaccines.
