    Background:

    • Breast cyst fluid (BCF) composition is not fully understood.
    • The role of hormones in breast diseases requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify thyroid hormones and related substances in breast cyst fluid and plasma.
    • To explore potential correlations between these substances and breast cyst disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassayable measurement of total and free 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine binding globulin (TBG), and prolactin (Prl).
    • Analysis of samples from 73 pre-menopausal women with gross cystic breast disease and their corresponding blood samples.

    Main Results:

    • Free T3 and free T4 levels were significantly higher in BCF than in plasma.
    • Total T3 was also elevated in most BCF samples, while total T4, TBG, and prolactin were lower.
    • A significant inverse correlation was observed between intracystic free T3 and prolactin levels.

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroid hormones may accumulate in breast cyst fluid in their active forms.
    • Thyroid hormones and prolactin might interact at the breast level, potentially influencing gross cystic breast disease.
    • Hormone accumulation in BCF could be implicated in the pathogenesis or be a consequence of cystic changes.
