    Background:

    • Splenomegaly is frequently observed in patients undergoing regular hemodialysis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the underlying causes of clinically detectable splenomegaly in patients on regular hemodialysis.
    • To differentiate between potential causes such as iron overload, hepatitis, and the dialysis process itself.

    Main Methods:

    • Splenic volume was measured using isotopic scanning with technetium-99m microspheres.
    • 34 healthy controls and 149 patients with chronic renal failure were studied.
    • Patient groups included those never dialyzed, on peritoneal dialysis, on hemodialysis, and post-renal transplant.

    • Increased mean splenic volume was exclusively observed in patients undergoing regular hemodialysis.
    • Splenic enlargement occurred irrespective of intravenous iron administration, ruling out iron overload.
