    Summary

    Adolescent males with schizophrenia may show elevated human growth hormone (GH) after thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) infusion, particularly those with a family history. Other hormone responses did not differ significantly between patients and controls.

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder with potential neuroendocrine dysregulation.
    • Previous research suggests alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in schizophrenia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the human growth hormone (GH) response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) infusion in adolescent males with schizophrenia.
    • To explore potential correlations between GH response, family history, and other hormonal profiles.

    Main Methods:

    • Intravenous infusion of TRH was administered to adolescent males with schizophrenia on neuroleptic drugs and to matched controls.
    • Measurements included GH, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) levels.
    • Family history of schizophrenia was assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Three of seven schizophrenic patients exhibited a marked GH elevation post-TRH infusion, compared to one of five controls.
    • All three schizophrenic 'responders' had a positive family history of schizophrenia.
    • No significant differences were observed in TSH, T3, or T4 response patterns between groups.
    • No significant correlations were found between hormonal responses and clinical/demographic factors.

    Conclusions:

    • A subset of adolescent males with schizophrenia may exhibit an exaggerated GH response to TRH, potentially linked to genetic predisposition.
    • The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis does not appear to be differentially affected in this specific patient group.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying schizophrenia.
