    Summary

    Plasma antithrombin III (AT III) levels were studied in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Reduced AT III activity was observed in some patients, with variations noted in those with lupus anticoagulant.

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease associated with an increased risk of thrombosis.
    • Antithrombin III (AT III) is a key inhibitor of coagulation, and its deficiency can predispose individuals to thrombotic events.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate plasma antithrombin III (AT III) levels in patients with SLE and other connective tissue disorders.
    • To explore the relationship between AT III activity, disease activity, thrombosis, and the presence of lupus anticoagulant in SLE patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma AT III levels were measured using both immunological (Mancini method) and functional (thrombin/chromozyn TH) assays.
    • Patient cohorts included 39 with SLE and 12 with other connective tissue disorders.

    Main Results:

    • Reduced AT III activity was found in 17 patients, with 8 experiencing thrombosis.
    • Low AT III levels correlated with disease exacerbations in 6 patients and systemic vasculitis in 2.
    • Marked variation in functional AT III activity was observed in 30 patients positive for lupus anticoagulant.

    Conclusions:

    • Reduced AT III activity may be present in SLE patients, potentially linked to disease activity and thrombosis.
    • The presence of lupus anticoagulant is associated with significant variations in functional AT III activity, warranting further investigation.
