    Summary

    Spondylolysis, a condition affecting the spine, is common and not always linked to low back pain. However, spondylolisthesis, a related condition, is consistently associated with pain and may warrant longer sick leave.

    Background:

    • Low back pain is a prevalent condition with various potential causes.
    • Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis are common spinal abnormalities identified through imaging.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of prelysis, lysis, and olisthesis in individuals with and without low back pain.
    • To determine the association between these spinal findings and the severity of low back pain.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study involving 1024 subjects, including those with low back pain and healthy controls.
    • Radiographic assessment to identify prelysis, lysis, and olisthesis.

    Main Results:

    • Prevalence rates: prelysis (16.4%), lysis (10.5%), and olisthesis (2%).
    • No significant association found between prelysis/lysis and low back pain.
    • Lysis showed a potential association with increased low back pain severity.
    • All subjects with olisthesis experienced low back pain.

    Conclusions:

    • Spondylolysis (lysis or pre-lysis) should not disqualify individuals from occupations.
    • Spondylolisthesis warrants occupational exclusion.
    • Both lysis and olisthesis can be associated with more severe low back pain, justifying extended sick leave.
