    Summary

Thymosin treatment inhibited T-dependent tumor growth enhancement by splenocytes in mice. Thymosin fraction 5 also blocked suppressor cell activity in human lymphocytes, suggesting therapeutic potential.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Oncology
    • Endocrinology

    Context:

    • Suppressor cells play a critical role in immune regulation and tumor progression.
    • Thymosin, a group of peptides, is known to modulate immune responses.
    • Tumor-bearing hosts often exhibit altered immune cell activity.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the effect of thymosin on suppressor cell activity in both murine tumor models and human lymphocyte systems.
    • To determine if thymosin can counteract the immunosuppressive effects contributing to tumor growth.

    Summary:

    • In a murine model, thymosin treatment eliminated the T-dependent enhancement of tumor growth mediated by splenocytes from tumor-bearing mice.
    • Administration of thymosin-treated bone marrow cells led to a reduction in tumor size.
    • In vitro studies demonstrated that thymosin fraction 5 blocked the suppressive activity of Concanavalin A (ConA)-stimulated human lymphocytes on normal lymphocyte responses.

    Impact:

    • Thymosin demonstrates potential as an immunomodulatory agent in cancer therapy.
    • These findings suggest thymosin can restore anti-tumor immune responses by modulating suppressor cell activity.
