    Summary

    Serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels are elevated in women with hyperprolactinemia. This finding suggests a link between high prolactin and DHEA-S, independent of amenorrhea.

    Background:

    • Hyperprolactinemia is a condition characterized by elevated prolactin levels.
    • Secondary amenorrhea can result from hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction.
    • Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is an androgen precursor with potential roles in reproductive health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels and hyperprolactinemia.
    • To determine if elevated DHEA-S is associated with hyperprolactinemia independently of secondary amenorrhea.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum DHEA-S levels were measured in women with hyperprolactinemia and compared to those in normal women.
    • Serum DHEA-S levels were also compared between hyperprolactinemic and normoprolactinemic patients with secondary amenorrhea due to hypothalamic-pituitary failure.

    Main Results:

    • Women with hyperprolactinemia exhibited significantly higher serum DHEA-S levels compared to normal women during the early follicular phase.
    • In patients with secondary amenorrhea from hypothalamic-pituitary failure, serum DHEA-S levels were significantly higher in those with hyperprolactinemia than in normoprolactinemic patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated serum DHEA-S levels are associated with hyperprolactinemia.
    • The observed elevation in DHEA-S appears to be linked to hyperprolactinemia itself, rather than secondary amenorrhea.
