    Summary

    Eclampsia, a severe pregnancy complication, does not favor any body type but shows a slight tendency towards underweight women. This finding clarifies the long-standing debate on body build and eclampsia susceptibility.

    Background:

    • The relationship between physical build and eclampsia risk has been debated for centuries.
    • Previous studies are often confounded by misdiagnoses of preeclampsia in women with nonconvulsive hypertensive disorders.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between bodily build and eclampsia in a cohort of eclamptic women.
    • To clarify the controversial link between body type and eclampsia susceptibility.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 193 nulliparous and 49 multiparous women diagnosed with eclampsia.
    • Comparison of 63 nulliparous eclamptic women with age-, race-, and parity-matched normal controls.
    • Controls were matched for clinic/non-clinic and private status, and delivery timing.

    • Eclampsia affects women across all body types (habitus).
    • A slight predilection for eclampsia was observed in underweight women.

    • Underweight status may represent a minor, but statistically observable, susceptibility factor for eclampsia.
