    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Vestibular System Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Air caloric testing is a common diagnostic tool for vestibular function.
    • Technical challenges in controlling air temperature and measurement accuracy have limited its widespread adoption.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate an improved air caloric testing technique.
    • To enhance the reliability and consistency of air caloric measurements.

    Main Methods:

    • Designed novel irrigating tips for precise air delivery and simultaneous temperature monitoring.
    • Utilized preset temperatures (24°C and 50°C) with a controlled airflow (6 L/min for 60s).
    • Collected data on caloric responses, including mean maximum speed and standard deviation.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved equilibrated air temperatures of 27.4°C and 45°C at the delivery orifice.
    • Caloric response parameters were comparable to established water caloric testing results.
    • No significant differences were found between ears or between warm and cold stimuli.
    • Over 2000 clinical examinations demonstrated satisfactory results and patient acceptance.

    Conclusions:

    • The improved air caloric technique offers reliable and consistent vestibular function assessment.
    • This method provides a viable alternative to water calorics with excellent patient tolerance.
    • Standard probe sizes are suitable for most patients, simplifying clinical application.
