    Summary

    CT-guided liver biopsies using cutting needles yielded significantly more diagnostic tissue than aspiration biopsies. This method offers a higher diagnostic yield for liver abnormalities without substantially increasing complication risks.

    Background:

    • Liver abnormalities detected via computed tomography (CT) often require tissue diagnosis.
    • CT-guided biopsy is a common procedure for obtaining liver tissue.
    • Different needle types and techniques exist for liver biopsy, each with varying efficacy and risk.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the diagnostic yield and complication rates of cutting needle biopsies versus aspiration biopsies for CT-guided liver biopsies.
    • To evaluate the correlation of cytologic and pathologic findings with surgical, autopsy, and clinical follow-up.
    • To discuss biopsy techniques, associated risks, and indications.

    • 180 patients with CT-demonstrated liver abnormalities underwent CT-guided biopsies.

    • Cutting needle biopsies are superior to aspiration biopsies for CT-guided liver tissue acquisition due to higher diagnostic yield.
    • The increased diagnostic yield does not significantly elevate complication risks.
    • CT-guided cutting needle biopsy is an effective method for diagnosing liver abnormalities.
