    Summary

Histological examination of synovial membranes from Behcet's syndrome patients revealed characteristic inflammatory changes. These findings suggest they could be added to diagnostic criteria for this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Pathology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Behcet's syndrome is a multisystem inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology.
    • Synovial membrane involvement is recognized but specific histological features require further definition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To histologically characterize synovial membrane changes in patients with Behcet's syndrome.
    • To assess the potential diagnostic value of these findings.

    Main Methods:

    • Histological examination of synovial membrane specimens from six patients with definite Behcet's syndrome.
    • Analysis of tissue composition, including inflammatory cell infiltrate and structural changes.

    Main Results:

    • Superficial synovial zones showed dense inflamed granulation tissue with lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils.
    • Plasma cell infiltrate and lymphoid follicles were noted in one case.
    • Pannus and erosive changes were observed in specimens including the articular surface.

    Conclusions:

    • The observed synovial histological features appear characteristic of Behcet's syndrome.
    • These findings may serve as valuable additions to the diagnostic criteria for Behcet's syndrome.
