    Summary

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are susceptible to infections, as seen with septic olecranon bursitis. Prompt antibiotic treatment was insufficient in some cases, necessitating surgical intervention.

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease associated with increased infection risk.
    • Olecranon bursitis is inflammation of the bursa overlying the elbow's olecranon process.
    • Septic bursitis involves infection of the olecranon bursa.

    Observation:

    • Three patients with SLE developed septic olecranon bursitis.
    • Initial treatment involved systemic antibiotics.
    • Two patients experienced prolonged infection courses despite antibiotic therapy.

    Findings:

    • Septic olecranon bursitis occurred in SLE patients.
    • Antibiotic treatment alone was not always sufficient for infection resolution.
    • Bursectomy was required in two cases to eliminate the infection.

    Implications:

    • SLE patients exhibit heightened susceptibility to infections, including septic bursitis.
    • Infections in SLE patients may require aggressive or multi-modal treatment approaches.
    • Septic bursitis can be a significant clinical manifestation in systemic lupus erythematosus management.
