    Summary

Epidural morphine effectively managed pain after hemorrhoid surgery for most patients. This single injection provided significant relief, minimizing the need for additional pain medication and resulting in no observed complications.

    Area of Science:

    • Colorectal Surgery
    • Anesthesiology
    • Pain Management

    Background:

    • Hemorrhoidectomy is a common surgical procedure.
    • Postoperative pain is a significant concern for patients undergoing hemorrhoidectomy.
    • Effective pain management is crucial for patient recovery and satisfaction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a single epidural morphine injection for postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing surgery for third- or fourth-degree hemorrhoids.
    • To assess the need for additional analgesics and identify any complications associated with this pain management strategy.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of sixty-six patients undergoing hemorrhoid surgery between January 1982 and November 1983 were included.
    • A single dose of epidural morphine was administered for postoperative pain control.
    • Patient-reported analgesic requirements and surgical complications were recorded.

    Main Results:

    • A high percentage of patients (83.3%) required no additional analgesics post-surgery.
    • A small proportion of patients (16.7%) needed only mild supplementary analgesics.
    • No complications were reported in any of the patients following the surgical procedure and epidural morphine administration.

    Conclusions:

    • Single-dose epidural morphine is a highly effective method for managing postoperative pain after hemorrhoid surgery.
    • This approach significantly reduces the need for other pain medications.
    • Epidural morphine offers a safe and well-tolerated option for pain control in this patient population.
