Status epilepticus, a prolonged seizure, can occur during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for chronic schizophrenia. This case study demonstrates that continuing ECT is safe and feasible even after such an event.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry

    Background:

    • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental disorders.
    • Modified unilateral nondominant ECT is a specific technique used in ECT.
    • Chronic schizophrenia is a long-term mental health condition.

    Observation:

    • Status epilepticus, a prolonged seizure, occurred during modified unilateral nondominant ECT.
    • The patient had chronic schizophrenia.

    Findings:

    • ECT was successfully continued after the occurrence of status epilepticus.
    • No further complications were observed after resuming ECT.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests that ECT can be safely continued in patients who experience status epilepticus.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Careful monitoring and management are crucial when administering ECT.
  • Further research may be warranted to explore the safety and efficacy of continuing ECT after seizure complications.
