    Summary

    This study found that mirex, a persistent organic pollutant, did not affect rat behavior in various tests. Long-Evans rats exposed to mirex showed no behavioral changes in operant conditioning or open-field tests.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of mirex exposure on the behavior of adult male Long-Evans rats.
    • To determine if mirex alters performance in operant conditioning and other behavioral tasks.

    Main Methods:

    • Adult male Long-Evans rats were administered diets containing mirex at concentrations of 1.78 ppm and 17.8 ppm.
    • Behavioral testing included open-field apparatus, variable interval (VI) 30-sec, differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL) 20-sec operant paradigms, and a discrimination-reversal task.
    • Control and mirex-exposed groups were compared across all behavioral tasks.

    Main Results:

    • No significant behavioral differences were observed between control rats and those exposed to mirex.
    • Mirex did not impact performance in the open-field, VI 30-sec, or DRL 20-sec operant paradigms.
    • Performance on the discrimination-reversal task was also unaffected by mirex exposure.
