    • Bilateral LC lesions were created in rats.
    • Nociceptive flinch-jump thresholds were measured post-lesion.
    • Lesion verification using monoamine histofluorescence and histology.

    • LC or dorsal noradrenergic bundle damage in 9/13 animals.
    • Eight of these animals showed significantly increased jump thresholds.
    • Animals with spared LC or raphe damage showed unchanged or decreased thresholds.

    Conclusions:

    • Norepinephrine plays a crucial role in pain modulation.
    • Norepinephrine and serotonin exhibit contrasting roles in nociception.
