[Thrombogenic thrombopenia induced by heparin].

    Summary

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a serious complication. Prompt diagnosis and switching anticoagulants, such as to vitamin K antagonists or low molecular weight heparin, are crucial for patient management.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Heparin is widely used for anticoagulation.
    • Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a rare but severe immune-mediated adverse drug reaction.

    Observation:

    • The study reports three cases of HIT.
    • Clinical and biological manifestations of HIT were reviewed.
    • Treatment strategies were analyzed.

    Findings:

    • Treatment involved discontinuing heparin and initiating anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists or low molecular weight heparin.
    • Monitoring platelet counts during heparin therapy is essential.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for HIT in patients receiving heparin.
    • Early recognition and appropriate management can prevent thrombotic complications.
    • This highlights the importance of vigilant patient monitoring during heparin therapy.
