    Summary

Medial patellar denervation surgery for patellar pain syndrome showed limited success. While some patients experienced symptom relief, the procedure was not sufficient to eliminate pain in all cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic surgery
    • Pain management
    • Biomedical research

    Background:

    • The exact causes of patellar pain remain unclear, hindering effective treatment.
    • Numerous surgical interventions exist, yet none have proven universally successful for patellar pain syndrome.
    • Surgical pain relief may stem from partial denervation of the patella.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of medial patellar denervation in alleviating patellar pain syndrome.
    • To assess the effectiveness of neurotomy as a surgical approach for patellar pain.

    Main Methods:

    • A medial patellar denervation procedure was performed on 17 patients (20 knees) diagnosed with patellar pain syndrome.
    • The average age of the participants was 24 years.
    • Outcomes were assessed at follow-up to determine symptom improvement or resolution.

    Main Results:

    • Following the medial neurotomy, 11 out of 20 knees showed improvement or complete symptom resolution.
    • The surgical outcomes were comparable to other existing surgical methods for patellar pain.

    Conclusions:

    • Medial patellar denervation (neurotomy) alone is not a sufficiently effective treatment to eliminate pain in all patients with patellar pain syndrome.
    • Further research is needed to explore more comprehensive surgical strategies for managing patellar pain.
    • The findings suggest that while denervation may contribute to pain relief, it is not a standalone solution.
