    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Ceruletide is a decapeptide derived from frog skin.
    • It shares biological similarities with cholecystokinin.
    • Ceruletide exhibits a potent relaxant effect on the sphincter of Oddi.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of ceruletide in managing biliary colic pain.
    • To compare ceruletide treatment against a placebo in a double-blind, controlled setting.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment was conducted.
    • Sixty subjects with moderate to severe biliary colic pain received either ceruletide (1 ng/kg IV) or a saline placebo.
    • Pain assessment included right hypochondrium pain, referred pain, and Murphy's sign, measured pre- and post-treatment.

    Main Results:

    • Ceruletide demonstrated effectiveness in alleviating biliary colic pain.
    • The study indicated a significant improvement in pain scores for the ceruletide group compared to the placebo group.

    Conclusions:

    • Ceruletide is an effective therapeutic agent for biliary colic.
    • Its mechanism involving the sphincter of Oddi relaxation contributes to its clinical utility.
