    Anaerobic meningitis is rare but can occur when bacteria spread from lung abscesses to the brain. Suspect anaerobic causes in meningitis cases with concurrent organ infections or head trauma.

    Background:

    • Advancements in bacteriological techniques have increased interest in anaerobic infections.
    • Anaerobes are infrequently identified as pathogens in purulent meningitis, accounting for less than 1% of cases.

    Observation:

    • A case of anaerobic meningitis was observed in a patient with multiple lung abscesses.
    • Anaerobic bacteria spread from the lung abscesses to the brain, leading to brain abscesses and meningitis.

    Findings:

    • Anaerobic meningitis developed secondary to a primary infection in the lungs.
    • The spread of anaerobic bacteria from a distant focus (lung abscesses) caused central nervous system infection.

    Implications:

    • Microbiological investigation for anaerobes is crucial in meningitis cases with suspected or confirmed anaerobic infections elsewhere in the body.
    • Consider anaerobic pathogens in meningitis following traumatic injury to the subarachnoid space.
