    This study reveals that inducing an immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody response in rabbits led to heightened sensitivity to cholinergic stimuli, mimicking autonomic nervous system abnormalities seen in atopic humans.

    Background:

    • Atopic individuals often exhibit autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction.
    • The relationship between immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic responses and ANS function requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of induced IgE antibody production on autonomic responsiveness in an animal model.
    • To determine if IgE sensitization alters pupillary responses to specific stimuli.

    Main Methods:

    • Rabbits were immunized to selectively produce IgE antibodies.
    • Pupillary responses to cholinergic and alpha-adrenergic stimuli were assessed.
    • Repeated sublethal anaphylactic challenges were administered to a subset of IgE-producing rabbits.

    • IgE-producing rabbits demonstrated hyperresponsiveness to cholinergic stimulation.
