Background:

Headaches, including vascular (migraine) and tension (muscle contraction) types, are common ailments.
The coronary-prone Type A behavior pattern is associated with cardiovascular disease.
Previous research suggests a link between certain behaviors and health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between headache types and the Type A behavior pattern in college women.
To explore potential implications of Type A behavior for headache etiology and management.

Main Methods:

College women were surveyed using a headache questionnaire to classify headache frequencies.
Participants were assessed for the Type A behavior pattern using the Jenkins Activity Survey.

Two independent surveys with 237 and 206 respondents were conducted.

Main Results:

Increasing frequencies of both vascular and tension headaches were significantly associated with higher Type A scores.
These findings were consistent across two independent surveys.
Results support prior data from a client population.

Conclusions:

The Type A behavior pattern is linked to increased frequency of both vascular and tension headaches in college women.
