A rare benign oral lesion, melanoacanthoma, presented as a pigmented macule on the buccal mucosa of a 39-year-old woman. Histology confirmed numerous melanocytes without atypia, supporting the diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral pathology
    • Dermatology
    • Histopathology

    Background:

    • Melanoacanthoma is a rare, benign pigmented lesion of the oral mucosa.
    • It typically presents as a rapidly growing, asymptomatic macule or plaque.

    Observation:

    • A 39-year-old African American woman presented with a newly discovered pigmented lesion on her right buccal mucosa.
    • The lesion measured 2.0 x 1.8 cm, was uniformly pigmented, and appeared macular to slightly plaque-like with symmetrical folding and indentation.

    Findings:

    • Histopathological examination revealed a hyperplastic mucous membrane.
    • Numerous dendritic melanocytes were observed at all levels of the epithelium.
    • No cellular atypia, pleomorphism, or stromal fibrosis was identified.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • The findings support the diagnosis of oral melanoacanthoma.
    • This benign condition requires accurate histopathological differentiation from malignant lesions.
    • Further research into the etiology and specific triggers of melanoacanthoma may be warranted.
