    Summary

A modified leg raising test effectively identifies intervertebral disc disorders. This simple maneuver, involving neck flexion and contralateral leg elevation, accurately diagnosed sciatic notch pain in patients with herniated discs.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Orthopedics
    • Diagnostic Medicine

    Background:

    • Intervertebral disc disorders are a common cause of sciatic pain.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a modified crossed leg raising test for diagnosing intervertebral disc disorders.
    • To assess the test's efficacy in identifying patients with sciatic notch pain.

    Main Methods:

    • A modification of the standard crossed leg raising test was employed.
    • The modified test involved simultaneous neck flexion and contralateral leg elevation.
    • Pain in the ipsilateral sciatic notch was the primary indicator.

    Main Results:

    • The modified test successfully identified five patients with intervertebral disc disorders.
    • Operative findings confirmed free fragments or herniated discs in all identified patients.
    • All patients experienced symptom relief following surgical intervention.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified crossed leg raising test is a valuable diagnostic tool for intervertebral disc disorders.
    • This technique aids in pinpointing the source of sciatic notch pain.
    • Successful surgical treatment leads to complete symptom resolution.
