Lymphocytapheresis therapy in multiple sclerosis, a preliminary study.

R Medaer, C Eeckhout, K Gautama

    Acta Neurologica Scandinavica
    |August 1, 1984

    Summary

Lymphocytapheresis showed mixed results for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. While some experienced improved disability and incapacity, it did not prevent disease exacerbations.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive neurological disease.
    • Current treatments aim to manage symptoms and slow disease progression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of lymphocytapheresis in treating multiple sclerosis patients.
    • To assess the impact of lymphocytapheresis on disability and neurological status.

    Main Methods:

    • A one-year study involving 10 patients with definite multiple sclerosis.
    • Treatment administered was lymphocytapheresis.
    • Evaluated outcomes using Disability Status Scale (DSS), Neurological Status Scale (NSS), and Incapacity Status Scale (ISS).

    Main Results:

    • Improvement in DSS observed in 4 patients, stability in 5, and deterioration in 1.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • NSS indicated stabilization for most neurological functions.
  • ISS showed improvement in 6 patients, stability in 1, and deterioration in 3.
  • Lymphocytapheresis did not prevent MS exacerbations.
  • Conclusions:

    • Lymphocytapheresis may offer some benefits in improving disability and incapacity in MS patients.
    • The treatment did not demonstrate a significant effect on preventing disease relapses.
    • Further research is needed to determine the role of lymphocytapheresis in MS management.
